Enrollment Declines and Permanent Closures In Public Schools

Dr. Sofoklis Goulas, Director of Public Policy Programs at Aletheia Research Institution and Fellow at the Brookings Institution, has published a new working paper first released as part of the IZA Institute of Labor Economics Discussion Paper Series. The paper, “Enrollment Declines and Permanent Closures in Public Schools,” analyzes ten years of federal school data to examine how declining student enrollment is linked to permanent school closures. The study finds that recent enrollment drops are strong predictors of closure, particularly in charter schools and urban areas, underscoring the need for targeted, community-specific policy responses.
